BCCI Faces Overwhelming Response to Head Coach Applications
The Indian team is currently in New York for the T20 World Cup to be held in America and West Indies. After this tournament, the tenure of the current team head coach Rahul Dravid ends. Therefore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had already invited applications for the post of head coach of the Indian team by May 27. Accordingly, more than 3 thousand applications have been received for this post so far.
Meanwhile, the BCCI shared a Google form on its website through which to fill out the application form for the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Taking advantage of this, there was a deluge of fake applications. According to a report in Indian Express, the names of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have been used by fake applicants for the post of Indian cricket team head coach.
The Challenge of Sifting Through Fake Applications
Many social media users started sharing screenshots of sending their applications. Now the report claims that the BCCI has to investigate several fake applicants who have used the names of veterans for the post. This has increased the headache of BCCI and now they have to prune the fake names. The report has also mentioned that more than three thousand applications have been received. The Indian Express quoted a BCCI official as saying, “BCCI received a similar response last year too where there were many fake applications. The situation is similar this time as well. The reason BCCI is calling for applications on Google Forms is that it is easy to check the names of applicants in one sheet.”

Future Prospects for the Head Coach Position
The current head coach Rahul Dravid has decided not to apply again. Because Dravid now wants to spend time with his family. Dravid’s tenure will end after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Although there is no official statement on the names of the actual applicants for the head coach post, several high-profile former cricketers have been roped in for the head coach post.
It is said that Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming are the frontrunners for the post of head coach. However, recently BCCI Secretary Jai Shah refuted reports claiming that the BCCI had held talks with Potting for the head coach position. Meanwhile, Jai Shah and Gautam Gambhir had a long interaction after the IPL 2024 final. Since then, it has been speculated that Gautam Gambhir could be the next head coach of the Indian team. However, it is not yet clear whether Gautam Gambhir has applied for the post or not.
