Anything for ‘Mahi’ Now no one: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the decision almost three years after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s international retirement that the iconic number 7 jersey, worn by the legendary captain of Team India, will no longer be available to any other Indian player. BCCI clarified that Dhoni himself chose to retire the number he wore throughout his career. Likewise, in 2017, another legendary cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar, witnessed the permanent retirement of his number 10 jersey.
As per a report by BCCI, they have decided that no other Indian cricketer will wear Dhoni’s iconic number 7 jersey. This decision comes three years after Dhoni retired from international cricket. The retirement of his number acknowledges Dhoni’s significant contributions to the game. Under Dhoni’s leadership, Team India secured victories in the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Mahendra Singh Dhoni chose to retire from the international format on 15th August 2020, after his retirement from Test cricket in 2014.
BCCI informed the debuting players-
The BCCI informed Team India players, particularly debutants, that numbers linked to Tendulkar and Dhoni are unavailable. A BCCI official instructed new players to avoid selecting MS Dhoni’s number 7 jersey. The board retired these numbers due to their contributions to the game. As a result, freshers cannot choose number 7, and number 10 is already unavailable.
What is the rule for selecting the T-shirt number of Team India?
The decision by BCCI has limited the options for Team India players. According to ICC rules, players can choose any number between 1 and 100. However, the available choices are constrained in India. Presently, there are approximately 60 designated numbers for both Team India regular players and competitors.
