ICC Women’s Championship: Australia won the ICC Women’s Championship title by defeating New Zealand at Basin Reserve in Wellington. Australia registered this victory by 75 runs.
This triumph marked the conclusion of the 24-match ICC Women’s Championship campaign, solidifying Australia’s dominance in the tournament.
Australia scored 39 points in this tournament. Which included 17 wins, three no results and three defeats. Australia’s total score is far ahead of other rival teams. India, their closest rivals, can only reach 37 points with their remaining matches against West Indies (two) and Ireland (three).
New Zealand’s World Cup Hopes in Jeopardy
The defeat in this tournament is going to have the biggest impact on the New Zealand team. Due to this, New Zealand’s chances of automatic qualification for the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup have now become doubtful.
New Zealand holds the last automatic qualification spot with 21 points after 24 matches. Bangladesh has 19 points and three matches left. West Indies have 14 points with five matches remaining.
So if Bangladesh or West Indies finish ahead on the points table, New Zealand will have to compete in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. The qualifier sees six teams compete for the final two tournament spots. Australia’s win has also secured an automatic World Cup spot for Sri Lanka, who can no longer be displaced by teams with matches remaining.
