Political Turmoil Threatens Tournament’s Fate

Bangladesh is currently grappling with widespread protests and violence. Demonstrators recently breached and vandalized the residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, seizing valuable items in the process. In response to the escalating situation, the interim government has declared a state of emergency. This volatile environment has prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) to contemplate shifting the tournament to alternative venues, with India, the United Arab Emirates, and Sri Lanka emerging as potential hosts.

Adding to the concerns, reports from Cricbuzz indicate that BCB President Nazmul Hasan has left Bangladesh amidst the turmoil. Despite this, other board officials stationed in Dhaka remain optimistic about hosting the prestigious event.

Efforts Underway to Ensure Tournament Proceeds as Planned

Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu, Chairman of the BCB Umpire Committee, expressed the board’s determination to host the World Cup. “We are trying to host the tournament. To be honest, there are fewer people, and we have only two months,” he remarked. Highlighting proactive measures, Mithu revealed that a letter was dispatched to the Army Chief on August 8, seeking guarantees regarding the event’s security.

The Women’s T20 World Cup is slated to run from October 3 to 20, featuring 10 teams competing in 23 matches across two venues in Dhaka and Sylhet. With only two months remaining, the ICC is closely monitoring the situation and is expected to decide on the tournament’s hosting on August 10.
