BCCI Denies Approaching Australian Coaches for Team India
The secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jai Shah, has firmly denied reports claiming that the BCCI has approached former Australian cricketers Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting for the head coach position of Team India.
In a statement reported by ANI, Shah clarified, “Neither I nor the BCCI have offered any Australian coach. The news going viral is wrong.” He emphasized the importance of the head coach role for Team India, noting that it requires a high level of professionalism due to the team’s vast fan base and the need to work with top-tier cricketers.
Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting’s Claims
Despite Jai Shah’s denial, both Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting had previously indicated that they were approached by the BCCI. Ponting, currently coaching Delhi Capitals, mentioned on ICC Review that although the BCCI had approached him for the head coach position, he is not ready to take on the role yet, despite his son’s enthusiasm for the idea. Similarly, Lucknow Super Giants coach Justin Langer told the BBC’s Stumped podcast that he is not prepared to coach the Indian team, citing the immense pressure and politics involved, as advised by KL Rahul.

Selection Process for New Head Coach
The BCCI has outlined a meticulous process for selecting the next head coach of Team India. Jai Shah stated that the board is focused on choosing a candidate with in-depth knowledge of Indian cricket, including domestic cricket, to elevate the team to the next level. The advertisement for the head coach position was released on April 13, with the deadline for applications set for May 27. The new head coach’s tenure will span from July 2024 to December 2027, covering all three formats of the game.
Rahul Dravid’s Tenure and Future Prospects
Rahul Dravid, who was appointed as the head coach in November 2021 following India’s exit from the T20 World Cup group stage, saw the team reach the semifinals in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Dravid’s tenure, initially set to end after the 2023 ODI World Cup, was extended as India progressed to the final of the T20 World Cup. The BCCI’s decision on the next head coach will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of Team India in international cricket.
