Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who is a big player now, was not initially perceived to become one in the future, according to coach Dinesh Lad, who also mentored Shardul Thakur.
In an interaction with ‘Lokmat’ while heading to Nagpur for a competition, he shared his insights.
When asked if he foresaw an emerging player who could represent India in the future, Dronacharya Lifetime Achievement Awardee coach Dinesh Lad stated, ‘Honestly, I didn’t anticipate Rohit Sharma to emerge as India’s future superstar initially.
However, after observing his performance in an under-16 tournament, I noticed the spark in him. There was something miraculous about his batting; his temperament showcased exceptional quality.
‘ It was from that point that he decided to focus on honing Rohit’s skills. ‘All players are equal to me. However, some dedicate themselves to rigorous practice. This is how exceptional players are born.’
Discussing Shardul Thakur, Lad remarked, ‘Shardul is also incredibly diligent. Although many have recognized his batting abilities in the past 1-2 years, I was already aware of his aggressive nature.
It’s true that he concentrated more on bowling, but he possesses a unique ability to strike the ball with confidence.’
Criticizing players has become a prevalent practice over the years. Lad remarked, ‘It’s easy to criticize any player who fails. However, individuals who understand the complete process of the game and the daily struggles of the players refrain from making such bold statements. We have a custom of praising the rising sun, but we fail to acknowledge the hard work put in by the orbiting earth for that to happen.’
Lad also emphasized that when we comprehend the true essence of the game, we will not aimlessly shoot arrows of criticism.
