COVID-19 Upsets Asia Cup 2023 Preparations: Just as things seemed to be on track, two Sri Lankan players testing positive for the virus have raised concerns. This unexpected development has brought uncertainty to the tournament, reminding us of the ongoing impact of the pandemic on

According to Sri Lankan reporter Danushka Aravinda, both Avishka Fernando, the Lankan opener, and wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera have tested positive for Covid-19. With the Asia Cup scheduled to begin in less than a week, this news adds uncertainty to the tournament’s preparations. This year’s tournament follows a hybrid model, featuring matches in both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan is set to host 4 matches, while the remaining fixtures, including those involving India, will be held in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s campaign kicks off on August 31 at the Pallekele International Stadium, facing Bangladesh, followed by a match against Afghanistan on September 5.

Fernando had tested positive for COVID-19 back in February last year, just before the ODI series against Zimbabwe. Interestingly, he got infected around two weeks after getting a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine. On the other hand, Perera had contracted the virus in August 2021 ahead of Sri Lanka’s limited-overs series against South Africa at home. As of now, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) hasn’t released any official statement on the matter. It’s noteworthy that Sri Lanka holds the title of defending champions in the Asia Cup and with home advantage, they are set to be strong contenders once again.
