Dimuth Karunaratne to Retire After 100th Test Against Australia

Dimuth Karunaratne Retire: Former Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne is likely to retire from international cricket in the second Test against Australia in Galle.

Karunaratne has scored 7172 runs in 99 Tests at an average of 39.40, including 16 centuries. He will be playing his 100th Test in Galle and plans to retire after reaching this milestone.

Karunaratne’s Farewell Match in Galle

According to a newswire report, the 36-year-old has informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) of his decision before the match. Talking about his innings in the first Test, he scored just seven runs in the first innings and was dismissed for a duck in the second innings as Sri Lanka lost the match by an innings and 242 runs. His poor batting form has been a major concern as his last century came against Ireland in April 2023.

Before the ongoing Australia series, Sri Lanka toured South Africa and the veteran had to struggle to get runs. He batted in four innings and scored just 27 runs as the visiting team was whitewashed. He stepped down from the captaincy in January 2024 after taking over as captain in 2019.

“Cricket fans around the world, I am finally handing over the reins of Sri Lanka’s Test captaincy after a fine and memorable career, to Dhananjaya de Silva, in my opinion, an outstanding all-rounder, who else could be better than you,” Karunaratne wrote on Facebook after resigning.
