India vs Sri Lanka Series: New Leadership Under Gautam Gambhir

BCCI Rejects Jonty Rhodes as Fielding Coach

BCCI has recently appointed Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of India. After that, all the focus will be on the support staff. Everyone is curious as to who will be Gambhir’s batting, fielding, and bowling coach for the next 5 years. Meanwhile, Gambhir had suggested the name of Jonty Rhodes for fielding. However, BCCI denied this and gave a blow to Gautam Gambhir. While Rahul Dravid was the coach, the Indian batting coach was Vikram Rathore, the bowling coach was Paras Mhambare, and the fielding coach was T Dilip. The tenure of all these ended with the T20 World Cup. In such a scenario, Team India is looking for new support staff.

Gambhir’s Suggestions Rejected

Primarily BCCI allows the head coach of the team the freedom to choose his support staff. Gautam Gambhir will also be allowed to choose his support staff. But the first choice of former Indian opener and head coach Gautam Gambhir as bowling coach and fielding coach has been rejected by the board. Gambhir had recommended former Indian fast bowler R Vinay Kumar to be appointed as the bowling coach. However, BCCIA did not show interest in Vinay Kumar’s name. After that, the board has also rejected Jonty Rhodes as Gambhir’s fielding coach. There is no doubt about the quality of Rhodes.

Even today he is counted among the best fielders in the world. Apart from this, the South African legend is currently associated with various teams in the IPL as a coach. He has worked with Gautam Gambhir in Lucknow Super Giants. But BCCI is not keen on appointing any foreign player as a coach in the support staff. For the past seven years, India has been working with an entirely indigenous support staff. And BCCI doesn’t want to change anything.

Commitment to Indigenous Support Staff

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the name of Jonty Rhodes was discussed. Gautam Gambhir suggested his name. However, the board has decided to retain Indian support staff only, sources said. In such a situation, the doors have opened again for T Dileep. Dileep has done a remarkable job with the Indian team during his tenure. It is also not unusual for Dileep from the previous coaching staff to stay with the current head coach of Team India. After the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rathore replaced Sanjay Bangar in Ravi Shastri’s coaching staff and remained there during Dravid’s tenure as well.
