Ashish Nehra’s Views on Team Selection and Senior Players
Ashish Nehra expressed that India’s next ODI series is scheduled in 2-3 months, suggesting that it could have been an opportunity to rest senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Nehra pointed out that Gambhir, being a new coach, might prefer to play experienced players to establish a strong team. However, Nehra believes that Gambhir should have taken the chance to test new players instead.
“India’s next ODI series is after 2-3 months. In such a situation, Rohit and Virat could have been rested to give new players a chance in this series. Gambhir is a new coach, he wants to play a cricket series with senior players in the team. I agree. But Gambhir is not a foreign coach. He should not have rushed to play Virat-Rohit,” Nehra said.

The Importance of Utilizing New Players
Ashish Nehra emphasized that foreign coaches often rely on senior players to build rapport with the team due to their lack of familiarity with Indian players. However, since Gambhir is an Indian and well-acquainted with the players, he has a unique opportunity to introduce and test new talent. Nehra suggested that a different strategy could have been employed in the current series to give new players a chance.
“Foreign coaches don’t know Indian players very well. So they rely on senior players to make friends with the players. But Gambhir is an Indian. He also knows Rohit, Kohli, and other players. So Gambhir has a golden opportunity to give new players a chance and try them out. When cricket at home starts, Rohit-Virat can be played. I won’t say that what Gambhir is doing now is a mistake. But in the current series, a different strategy could be used,” Ashish Nehra suggested
