Harbhajan Singh, the former Indian cricketer, has weighed in on India’s middle-order selection dilemma for the upcoming World Cup. Following India’s impressive win against Australia, Harbhajan praised Shreyas Iyer’s stellar century and Suryakumar Yadav’s consistent performance in the 2nd ODI.
Harbhajan didn’t delve into the specifics of the middle-order selection but strongly endorsed Suryakumar Yadav’s inclusion in the World Cup squad. He declared Suryakumar as the “ace of spades” in India’s World Cup team, emphasizing that his name should be the first on the team sheet.
“Suryakumar Yadav has to play all the matches. I don’t care whom he replaces, but his name should be taken first and then the rest. You have a player who is a pure match-winner and can single-handedly make the game one-sided. He is the ace of spades. We have been talking about a finisher…he is the one. He has to play at No. 5 for India,” Harbhajan stated.
With the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who were rested for the first two matches against Australia in the Australia tour of India / 22 Sep – 03 Dec 2023, the final batting lineup for India in Rajkot will be closely watched as the team management grapples with selection decisions ahead of the World Cup.
