ICC Awards 2024: The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the final set of shortlists for the ICC Awards 2024, honoring outstanding performers in the men’s Test and overall categories; Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer and Rachel Hayhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

Recognizing the best male cricketer of the year, the nominees for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy include heavyweight candidates.

Harry Brook has had a memorable year on the international stage across all formats, hitting explosively in England’s Tests, ODIs and T20Is and boasting averages of over 50 in all three formats. After a sensational year in the longest format, his compatriot Joe Root earned the nomination, scoring more runs (1,556) and more centuries (six) than any other batsman.

Another star performer at the peak of his powers in 2024 is India’s pace sensation, Jasprit Bumrah, who dominated the batsmen in World Test Championship duels and inspired India to glory at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June, including the Man of the Tournament award. 15 wickets at an unprecedented average of 8.24.

The final name on the list for the prestigious award is Australian all-rounder Travis Head. The top-ranked men’s T20I batsman aims to go one better than his nomination in the same category last year after hitting nearly 1,400 runs across all formats with trademark flair.

Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapathu and South Africa’s Laura Wolvaard have been nominated in their third categories in the Rachel Hayhoe Flint Trophy for the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year, with both captains honoured on the ODI and T20I shortlists on Sunday.

Top Contenders for ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year

Athapathu was an inspirational leader for Sri Lanka, scoring over 1,100 runs during the year, taking 30 wickets and leading his team to a historic first Asia Cup success in front of their home crowd.

Leading the ICC Women’s ODI Batter Rankings, Wolvaardt was at her best in 2024, scoring more than 1,500 runs across all formats as South Africa reached their second consecutive Women’s T20 World Cup final in the UAE.

Amelia Kerr was the chief architect of South Africa’s defeat in that final, and after scoring 651 runs with bat and ball and taking 43 wickets, she is among the nominees for the Heoho Flint Trophy. In a record-breaking campaign as player of the tournament in the Women’s T20WC.

The final name in contention is Australia’s Annabelle Sutherland. The 23-year-old capped a successful year by scoring the fastest double century in a women’s Test against South Africa in February and earning player of the series accolades in remarkable wins over India and New Zealand towards the end of the year. She ended the year with 615 runs and 37 wickets.

Finally, the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year shortlist features a dazzling quartet, three of whom have been honoured on the shortlist for the Sobers Trophy.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Dominance with the Ball

Harry Brook scored 1,100 Test runs at an average of 55.00 in the calendar year and four centuries including a memorable triple in England’s victory over Pakistan in Multan in October. He shared a 454-run partnership with Joe Root in that match and his teammate celebrates a Test nomination a year later in which he overtook ICC Hall of Famer Sir Alastair Cook to become England’s all-time highest run-scorer. -Longest run-scorer in the longest format and returned to number one in the ICC Men’s Test Batsmen’s Rankings.

Jasprit Bumrah is the only bowler shortlisted, having taken 71 wickets in Tests in 2024 – the most by any bowler, at an average of 14.92. With electric spells against South Africa, England and Australia among his highlights, the top-class Test bowler led India’s attack with relentless pace, accuracy and menace.

Completing the list is Sri Lanka’s record batsman Kamindu Mendis, who capped off a successful year with 1,049 runs at an unprecedented average of 74.92, during which the 26-year-old became the first batsman to hit a half-century. Fastest batsman to reach 1,000 Test runs in each of the first eight Tests and 75 years.
