IND vs BAN: Rain in Kanpur Pushes Match Towards Draw, Makes WTC Path Tough for Team India

Rain May Derail India’s Clean Sweep in Test Series

Rain can become a villain for India in the second match of the Test series being played with Bangladesh at Green Park. Team India, which has taken a 1-0 lead in the Chennai Test, has come to Kanpur with the intention of a clean sweep, but the intermittent rain since the first day can make its path to the World Test Championship (WTC) difficult. If the second Test match is drawn due to rain, then to reach the WTC final, India will have to win the series with New Zealand and Australia at all costs

Day Two Washed Out

The second day of the India and Bangladesh Test was completely washed away by rain. The heavy rain from Friday afternoon to late night did not allow the ground cover to be removed on Saturday. The UPCA had started the process of removing the water accumulated in the ground after the rain stopped at around 2 am late at night, but the rain again in the morning spoiled the hard work of the ground workers. Due to this, the Indian and Bangladesh teams, who reached the ground in the morning, returned to the hotel without entering the field.

On the first day of the match, Bangladesh scored 107 runs at the loss of three wickets in 35 overs. Mominul Haque is unbeaten on 40 and Mushfiqur Rahim is unbeaten on six runs. In bowling, fast bowler Akash Deep took two wickets for India, and Ashwin, who was the Man of the Match of the Chennai Test, took one wicket.

Impact on WTC

The Bangladesh Test series has many meanings. Along with winning five of the upcoming eight Test matches, India will also have to keep an eye on the performance of Sri Lanka, which is in third place in the WTC rankings, and New Zealand, which is in fourth place. In the current WTC rankings, India is in first place with 86 points in 10 matches and 71.67 percent marks, Australia is in second place with 90 points and 62.50 percent marks in 12 matches, Sri Lanka is in third place with 48 points and 50 percent marks in eight matches and New Zealand is in fourth place with 36 points and 42.86 percent marks in seven matches.

Ground Conditions and Efforts

For this match, which is important according to the WTC ranking, match referee Jeff Crowe inspected the ground three times on Saturday. After inspection at 10 am, at 1 pm, and then at 2:04 pm, after discussion with pitch curator Shiv Kumar, the match referee declared the second day’s play over.

Pitch curator Shiv Kumar said that to keep the pitch safe, first, a carpet is laid, after which another layer is laid on top of it. In the third stage, the pitch is also covered along with the outfield of the stadium. He said that the purpose of laying the carpet is to keep the pitch’s behavior as before. Along with preventing moisture from reaching the pitch, the carpet is also capable of absorbing it when it evaporates.
