Retention Rules and Costs

Every IPL franchise can retain a maximum of 6 players. This includes the Right to Match card as well. If the franchise retains 4 players, then it will have 2 RTM cards. It retains 1 player, then it will have 5 and if it does not retain anyone, then it will have 6 RTM cards.

If the team retains 6 players, then it will not have a Right to Match card during the auction. A franchise can retain a maximum of 5 capped and 2 uncapped players.

Here’s a breakdown of the potential costs:

Number of Players Retained Total Cost (in Rs Crore)
1 Player 18
2 Players 32 (1st 18, 2nd 14)
3 Players 43 (1st 18, 2nd 14, 3rd 11)
4 Players 61 (4th player costs 18)
5 Players 75 (5th player costs 14)
6 Players 4 (capped/uncapped)

These players can be either Indian or foreign. All the teams will have Rs 120 crore each in their purse

What is an RTM Card?

RTM card gives the franchise the right to add a player to their team by paying the highest bid amount for that player in the auction. Suppose RCB releases Virat Kohli and he enters the auction.

During the auction, many franchises bid on him, and finally, Chennai Super Kings bought Virat Kohli by bidding for Rs 20 crore. So RCB can add Virat Kohli to their team by paying Rs 20 crore using the RTM card.

With excitement building for IPL 2025, fans are ready for the retention drama on Diwali!
