Jacob Bethell Injured: England’s talented all-rounder Jacob Bethell will miss the final two ODIs against India due to a hamstring injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Sunday, February 9.

Jacob Bethell Ruled Out of India ODIs

Top-order batsman Tom Banton, who can also keep wickets, has been called up in Bethell’s place. However, he is expected to join the team on Monday, February 10, and will be available to play only the third ODI in Ahmedabad.

Bethell played three T20Is in the five-match series against India but failed to impress. However, he did well in the first ODI in Nagpur as he scored a spirited half-century and also took the wicket of the in-form Shreyas Iyer.

With a place in England’s provisional squad, Bethell will hope to recover in time for the Champions Trophy. The Three Lions have three more days to announce their final 15-man squad for the marquee tournament.

Tom Banton Replaces Jacob Bethell

Meanwhile, Banton’s last ODI was in August 2020. Most recently, he had a sensational innings in the 2025 ILT20, in which he scored 493 runs in 11 innings at an astonishing average of 54.78 and an impressive strike rate of 151.69.

“The England men’s team has called up Somerset batsman Tom Banton as cover for the third ODI against India in Ahmedabad, starting on Wednesday. Warwickshire batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who played in the first ODI in Nagpur, has suffered a left arm muscle injury. The injury will be further assessed when the team arrives in Ahmedabad on Monday,” the ECB said in a press release.

“Banton, who last played an ODI for England in August 2020, has been in excellent form in T20 franchise cricket. He is currently the leading run-scorer in the UAE ILT20 tournament, where he has scored 493 runs in 11 innings at an average of 54.77, including two centuries,” the press release further said.
