BCCI’s Efforts and Financial Approval
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been requesting that Team India participate in the tournament in Pakistan. Despite these efforts, the decision remains unclear. BCCI Secretary Jai Shah has approved a budget of $70 million (approximately 586 crores INR) for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This budget approval was part of the ICC meeting held in Colombo, where Shah, along with other officials, reviewed and signed off on the tournament’s budget presented by the PCB to host Champions Trophy.
Possibility of a Hybrid Model
Jai Shah, who is the chairman of the ICC Finance and Commercial Committee, played a crucial role in finalizing the tournament budget. The budget, prepared by the PCB and ICC’s finance department, includes an additional $4.5 million (approximately 37.67 crores INR) to accommodate matches involving India in other countries if needed. This provision hints at a potential hybrid model where some matches could be moved outside Pakistan to ensure India’s participation

Historical Context and Pakistan’s Preparation
This will be the first ICC tournament in Pakistan in 29 years, with the last being the 1996 World Cup co-hosted by India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The PCB is keen to host the entire tournament within Pakistan and has even released a draft schedule, planning all India matches in Lahore. A highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan is scheduled for March 1. However, the final decision on the venue and format remains pending, awaiting further clarity on India’s stance.
The Champions Trophy 2025 promises to be a significant event, but the participation of Team India and the exact format of the tournament still hang in the balance
