Jason Behrendorff in BBL: Melbourne Renegades have signed free agent Jason Behrendorff to a three-year deal in the Big Bash League (BBL). The left-arm fast bowler is the first major signing under the BBL’s new player transfer window

Key Signing in New Player Transfer Window

Behrendorff’s exit from the Perth Scorchers came as a surprise to many fans as he was a key player in the Scorchers’ success, playing a key role in four BBL titles during his 13-year career.

However, the Scorchers failed to reach the finals for the first time in five seasons, prompting the franchise to make tough decisions regarding their roster. Behrendorff and other high-profile players such as AJ Tye and Mitchell Marsh were dropped from the 10-man list retained before the player transfer window opened.

For the Scorchers, he took 140 wickets and became the franchise’s second-highest wicket-taker. In the recent 2024-25 season, the fast bowler took 17 wickets at an average of 17.41 and an economy rate of 7.55. However, with the Scorchers deciding to make changes to the team, the Renegades jumped at the chance to bring the experienced pacer to Melbourne.

Behrendorff Looks Forward to a Fresh Start

The Melbourne-based franchise offered Behrendorff a three-year deal that gave him the security of a stable role. Behrendorff expressed mixed feelings about leaving Perth but spoke of his excitement at joining a new team.

“The Scorchers will always have a special place in my heart, I always thought I would finish my BBL career with the Orange but it wasn’t to be. I gave it my all knowing I was leaving the club, I’ve enjoyed my time there as an individual player and as a teammate. As a team, we’ve worked hard and that has brought us a lot of success, being part of 4 BBL trophies is a major career highlight.

Future Opportunities with Renegades

Moving to Melbourne is something that Jewell [Behrendorf’s wife] and I have spoken about as a goal towards the end of my career, so it’s a blessing to be able to continue my career and play cricket in the city we both love. I’m excited about what the next chapter with the Melbourne Renegades holds for me but it’s equally important for my family,” he said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Behrendorff’s contract with the Renegades could open the door for him to play for the San Francisco Unicorns, a Cricket Victoria-operated Major League Cricket franchise.
