Kamindu Mendis Makes History with Record Century Against New Zealand
Sri Lanka’s young batsman Kamindu Mendis created history in the second and final Test against New Zealand. Kamindu scored a century on the second day of the Galle Test. Kamindu has equaled the record of legendary cricketer Sir Don Bradman with this century. It has also broken the record of England’s experienced batsman and former captain Joe Root. Also, after Kamindu’s century, Sri Lanka has reached a stronger position.
Kamindu scored 51 off 56 balls on Day 1 to set a world record for his eighth consecutive 50+ innings on debut. Kamindu also broke Pakistan’s Saud Shakeel’s record of scoring 50+ runs 7 times in a row on debut. Kamindu then continued the same rhythm on the next day and completed his century. Kamindu scored this century in 147 balls with 12 fours and 1 six. This was Kamindu’s fifth century in Test career. Kamindu did this feat in just the 13th inning. Kamindu also equaled Sir Don Bradman’s record of scoring 5 Test centuries in the shortest innings. Everton Weeks of Windies holds the record for scoring 5 centuries in the shortest innings. Weeks scored 5 centuries in 10 innings.
Meanwhile, Kamindu’s total became the fifth century in the year 2024. Kamindu also broke England’s Joe Root’s record of most 4 centuries in 2024. In Test cricket in the year 2024 after Root, Team India’s Shubman Gill, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, and England’s Ollie Pope have scored 3 Test centuries each.
