Lance Morris Ruled Out for 12 Months After Back Surgery Decision

Sydney, August 24, 2025 — Australian fast bowler Lance Morris has been ruled out of cricket for up to 12 months after opting to undergo pars stabilisation surgery to fix recurring stress fractures in his lower back. The 27-year-old, contracted with Cricket Australia (CA), will now miss the entire 2025-26 season, including domestic and international fixtures.
Surgery to End Long-Standing Back Troubles
Cricket Australia confirmed on Sunday that Morris will undergo the procedure in Christchurch, New Zealand, under the experienced surgeons Rowan Schouten and Grahame Inglis, who have successfully treated several fast bowlers worldwide.
Morris’ decision mirrors that of his Western Australia and Australia teammate Cameron Green, who underwent the same surgery last year. Other notable cricketers — including Jasprit Bumrah, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, and Ben Dwarshuis — have also had similar procedures to stabilise their backs using screws and titanium cables.
“I feel this is the most logical way to realise my full potential and return to my very best cricket for the Scorchers, Western Australia, and Australia,” Morris said. “I take great confidence from others who’ve undergone similar procedures and returned successfully. I plan to work hard on my recovery and return when the time is right.”
A Career Halted by Injuries
Morris has been one of Australia’s most promising express pacers, consistently clocking 150kph and taking 26 wickets in four Sheffield Shield games during the 2022-23 summer. However, injuries have derailed his progress:
-
Missed the 2023 Ashes due to recurring back concerns.
-
Played just one ODI after debuting in February 2024.
-
Managed only a handful of Sheffield Shield matches over the past two seasons.
-
Took a brilliant 5/26 in his last Shield match against New South Wales in March 2025 but has not played since.
Despite feeling pain-free at times, regular MRI scans revealed recurring stress-related damage in his back, forcing CA’s medical staff to take a cautious approach to managing his workload.
Australia’s Fast Bowling Transition
Australia’s pace attack is approaching a period of transition, making Morris’ absence a significant blow. Mitchell Starc will turn 36 in January 2026, while Josh Hazlewood turns 35 and Pat Cummins 33 in the same period.
Morris, along with fellow injured quick Jhye Richardson (28), was seen as a key part of Australia’s future bowling plans. Young talents from the 2024 Under-19 World Cup — Callum Vidler, Tom Straker, Charlie Anderson, and Mahli Beardman — are now expected to transition into the senior setup slowly.
What’s Next for Morris
The surgery offers hope that Morris can finally get a sustained run of matches without the fear of recurring injuries. With Australia’s packed schedule from October 2026 to November 2027 — including tours to South Africa, India, and England, plus a potential World Test Championship final and ODI World Cup — fast bowling depth will be crucial.
