Lockie Ferguson on 2019 World Cup Semi-Final: Dhoni’s Leave, Key Moments, and Kiwi Win

Lockie Ferguson on MS Dhoni’s Leave: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson has been one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket, but his career has often been interrupted by injuries. Despite the setbacks, whenever he finds rhythm, Ferguson has proved to be a genuine match-winner for the Black Caps. Since his debut in 2016, the 34-year-old has represented New Zealand in all three formats, picking up 163 wickets across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
During a recent interview. Lockie Ferguson looked back at one of the most unforgettable moments of his career — the 2019 World Cup semi-final against India at Old Trafford, Manchester.
A Memorable Win Over India
The semi-final was stretched across two days due to rain, making it even more unique. New Zealand batted first and set a target of 240. Defending the modest total, Kiwi bowlers delivered a sensational performance. Matt Henry (3 wickets) and Trent Boult (2 wickets) rocked India’s top order, while Ferguson kept things tight with figures of 1/43 in 10 overs.
India, despite a spirited partnership between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, were bowled out for 221, and New Zealand sealed an 18-run victory. Ferguson said it was one of the proudest moments of his career as the Black Caps reached the final.
Lockie Ferguson on MS Dhoni’s Surprising Leave
One of the most talked-about moments of the match was MS Dhoni leaving a short-pitched delivery from Ferguson when the asking rate was over 10 runs per over. Fans were left stunned, and the clip went viral on social media.
Ferguson revealed the plan behind that delivery:
“The idea was to make Dhoni undercut it onto his stumps. I was surprised he left it, but as a bowler, you don’t mind when a batter lets the ball go. The next time I tried, he hit me for six. So, the plan almost worked twice!”
Although Dhoni fought hard, he could not take India over the line. Ferguson eventually dismissed him, which proved decisive for New Zealand.
Commitment to New Zealand Cricket
Apart from franchise cricket, Ferguson confirmed that his priority remains with New Zealand. He stressed his passion for wearing the Black Caps jersey and contributing whenever fit.
The 2019 semi-final remains one of his most cherished memories, not only for the win but also for the drama and intensity of the clash against India — a game that still lives fresh in the minds of cricket fans worldwide.
