However, Pakistan’s prospects have taken a significant hit as fast bowler Naseem Shah has been sidelined for the remainder of the Asia Cup due to a shoulder injury. This loss will undoubtedly sting Pakistan as they gear up for their must-win clash against Sri Lanka.
Stepping into Naseem’s shoes is 22-year-old Zaman Khan, a promising talent who has yet to make his ODI debut. This sudden elevation to the 17-member squad demonstrates the faith the Pakistan Cricket Board has in his potential. Additionally, the squad has been reinforced by the inclusion of fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani.
In an official statement, the PCB announced, “Right-arm fast bowler Zaman Khan has replaced Naseem Shah in Pakistan’s 17-player squad for the ongoing men’s ODI Asia Cup 2023. Zaman joined the team in the morning today and will train with the squad at the RPICS in the evening.”
Naseem Shah sustained his injury during the match against India and was forced to leave the field after delivering 9.2 overs without taking any wickets. The PCB disclosed, “Naseem injured his right shoulder during the match against India. He continues to be monitored by the team’s medical panel that is taking all necessary precautions keeping in mind the ICC men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.”
Adding to Pakistan’s woes, they were also without the services of Haris Rauf due to a side strain during the match against India. Despite not bowling on the reserve day, Rauf’s recovery is progressing positively. The PCB provided an update, stating, “Haris Rauf, who did not bowl on the reserve day of the Pakistan vs India contest as a precautionary measure, continues to recover well after he felt discomfort in his right flank on the first day of the match. These two fast bowlers are our assets, and the team’s medical panel will provide them the best possible care ahead of the all-important World Cup.” If he is not fit until the match then we would see Mohammad Wasim in place of Rauf.
