Atkinson has achieved this feat by taking the last three wickets of New Zealand on three consecutive balls. He completed his maiden Test hat-trick by dismissing Nathan Smith in the third ball of the 35th over, Matt Henry in the next ball and then Tim Saudi in the fifth ball. The New Zealand team could score only 125 runs in the first innings. With this, Atkinson has taken the 15th hat trick for the country.

A 16-Year Wait Ended
Atkinson has also ended a long drought. After 16 years, the English bowler has taken a hat-trick outside the country. Before that, Ryan Sidebottom took a hat-trick against New Zealand. At the same time, he is the first bowler to take a hat-trick for England since 2017. Moeen Ali took a hat-trick at the Oval in England in 2017. Notably, Atkinson is the 14th bowler to take a hat-trick. Stuart Broad has scored two hat-tricks for England.
