Johannesburg, August 24, 2025 — The countdown to the ICC ODI World Cup 2027 has officially begun! Even though there are still two years left for the tournament, preparations are already underway. A total of 54 matches will be played in the 2027 ODI World Cup:

  • 44 matches in South Africa

While South Africa and Zimbabwe will host for the second time, Namibia will create history by hosting its first-ever ODI World Cup matches.

Tournament Format

The 2027 ODI World Cup will follow the same format as 2023:

  • 14 teams will participate

  • Two groups of seven teams each

  • The top teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages

  • The tournament is likely to be held between September and October 2027

Why It’s Crucial for India

India narrowly missed the title in the 2023 ODI World Cup, losing to Australia in the final. This time, the Men in Blue will aim to go one step further and reclaim the trophy.

Senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who haven’t retired from ODIs, are expected to feature in the 2027 squad. Both have significant experience playing in South African conditions, which could benefit India in crunch matches.

With a possible series against Australia on the cards, Rohit and Kohli are expected to begin early preparations to stay in top form ahead of the mega event.
