The Pakistan team is currently on a tour of Australia. According to the inside information from the Pakistan Cricket Board, if Pakistan’s team performance in white ball cricket in Australia is good, then Jason Gillespie can be appointed as the head coach of the national team for all formats. Currently, Gillespie is the head coach of Pakistan’s test team. After the sudden resignation of Gary Kirsten, he was appointed as the coach of the white ball series.
Jason Gillespie is likely to lead across all formats if Pakistan excels in Australia
Pakistan Cricket Board is not looking for any new candidates right now. The board has expressed belief in Jason Gillespie. If the performance of the Pakistan team in the white ball series in Australia remains excellent, then he can be appointed as the head coach of all formats.
At present, the board is planning to appoint Jason Gillespie as the all-format head coach instead of advertising for new candidates,” an unnamed PCB source told PTI on Thursday.
In the ongoing ODI match in Australia, Pakistan had to face defeat by 2 wickets in the first match but Pakistan beat Australia in the 2nd ODI by 9 wickets and levelled the series. The last game will be played on Sunday in Perth. After the ODI matches, there will be a series of three T20 matches on 14, 16 and 18 November.
The head coach can be decided before the Zimbabwe tour:
Pakistan has several upcoming tours, The team will tour Zimbabwe after the Australia series. There is a possibility that if everything remains in favour of the Pakistan team in Australia, then the decision of the head coach can be taken before the Zimbabwe tour. PCB can give Gillespie the responsibility of all formats before the Zimbabwe tour.
Although the Pakistan Cricket Board is not in search of a new candidate. Therefore, the board has given priority to Gillespie. Keeping the adverse conditions in mind, the Pakistan Cricket Board has prepared a shortlist of three former Pakistani players including former spinner Saqlain Mushtaq as backup.
For now, the Pakistan Cricket Board is keeping an eye on the team’s performance in Australia. If everything goes as planned, Gillespie will agree to play the role at least till April.
