Punjab Kings Shake Up Coaching Staff Ahead of IPL 2025
The Punjab Kings franchise is making significant changes ahead of IPL 2025, intending to improve their poor track record. Recently, the team appointed Ricky Ponting as the new head coach, a move announced on September 18, 2024. However, in the following eight days, the franchise took bold steps, letting go of two key figures—Director of Cricket Sanjay Bangar and former Head Coach Trevor Bayliss.
Major Overhaul at Punjab Kings
The decision to part ways with Sanjay Bangar and Trevor Bayliss was made after a meeting of the team’s board members. Four co-owners participated in the discussions, which led to the conclusion that fresh leadership was necessary to turn the team’s fortunes around. Despite the changes, Punjab Kings’ performance in recent IPL seasons has been dismal. Under Trevor Bayliss’ leadership, the team finished in 9th place in IPL 2024, failing to make the playoffs for the 10th consecutive year.
Punjab’s Struggle for Success
Punjab Kings have had a tough time in the IPL, having not reached the playoffs since 2014, when they last made it to the finals but fell short of winning the title. The franchise has gone through seven different coaches in the last decade, all in search of a winning formula. Sanjay Bangar, who was with the team from 2014 to 2016 and returned as Director of Cricket in 2023, was unable to bring about any notable improvement during his tenure.
The Punjab Kings now hope that Ricky Ponting’s leadership will help end their long-standing title drought as they prepare for IPL 2025 with a new direction.
