Ravichandran Ashwin Cricket Journey: Ravichandran Ashwin is one of the best spinners to ever play cricket. He recently announced his retirement from international cricket but will continue to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Ashwin Reflects on His Career and Future in Cricket
The veteran, who has taken 765 international wickets across all three formats, was recently at the AWS AI Conclave 2025 in Bengaluru. During the event, he was asked to name the toughest batsman he has bowled to, the best captain in the world, his favourite spinner partner and much more. Letโs see Ashwinโs answers.
Toughest batsman to bowl to?
Joe Root is a great batsman, I rate him against spin bowling. I think he had problems against left-arm spin bowling, but I think I found ways to dismiss him much later in his career. I have smooth feet and beautiful hands.
Best captain in the world?
If itโs about handling the team and getting the best out of a player, itโs MS Dhoni. But, I think the smartest person to read the script in this play is Steve Smith.
Your best spin bowling partner?
Ravindra Jadeja. He doesnโt think too much about dismissing batsmen, he gets involved in his work. He gives me a chance to be more creative.

Your favourite wicket celebration?
I dismissed Glenn Maxwell in 2014 and blew him away. He beat me in black and blue. Not proud of that.
Favourite Test match?
Against Australia in Bangalore in 2017. And in Melbourne after we were bowled out for 36.
Most challenging overseas situation?
South Africa gives you the Green Mamba, itโs very difficult to bowl to, but I find that difficult to answer.
Batsman you would have liked to have bowled to in your prime?
Brian Lara. I saw him dismiss Muralitharan in Sri Lanka when he scored 1000 runs in three matches.
Most interesting cricketer you have played against?
Marnus Labuschagne. I like the kind of energy he brings.
Ashwinโs Legacy and IPL Ambitions
Ashwin announced his retirement after the third Test between India and Australia during the Border-Gavaskar series. With 537 wickets in 106 Tests, he became Indiaโs second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, behind only Anil Kumble (619 wickets).
The 38-year-old Ashwin was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 9.75 crore after a bidding war with Rajasthan Royals. He played for the Men in Yellow from 2009 to 2015. Ashwin will be looking to make a second impression with the Chennai-based franchise and help them win a record sixth IPL title.
