India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, has provided a much-awaited update on the status of several key teammates as the country gears up for the Cricket World Cup 2023. While India’s performance in the Asia Cup Final showcased their strength, it also highlighted their absence of critical players, leaving fans wondering about the team’s composition for the upcoming World Cup.
Rohit Sharma, the skipper, has now shed light on the situation and expressed confidence that the squad will be in excellent health before the World Cup begins. He particularly mentioned the progress of Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer, assuring fans that both players are on track for a full recovery well before the tournament’s opening match on 8th October.
Axar Patel, a spin-bowling all-rounder, has been dealing with a wrist injury and a minor tear in his left quadricep, making his injuries the most concerning within the team. Rohit Sharma revealed that Axar might miss part of the World Cup lead-up series against Australia but remains optimistic about his availability for the main tournament.
“It looks like maybe a week or ten days (to heal), I don’t know. We have to see how that injury progresses,” Rohit stated after India’s convincing ten-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. “Some guys recover quickly, and I hope that’s the case with him. I am not sure whether he will be able to play the first two games against Australia at home. But we will wait and see.”
Shreyas Iyer, another key player, has been recovering from minor back spasms and is now declared “99% fit” for action. Although he missed the Asia Cup final due to these issues, Rohit Sharma confirmed that Iyer has nearly completed his rehabilitation.
“Shreyas was not available for (the final) because certain parameters were kept for him to tick off. I think today he completed most of it. I should say he is alright 99 per cent as of now,” Rohit shared, putting fans’ worries to rest.
Rohit Sharma also addressed the status of Ravichandran Ashwin, the spin-bowling all-rounder who wasn’t selected as Axar’s replacement for the Asia Cup final. Despite this, Rohit emphasized that Ashwin is still a contender for a spot in India’s Cricket World Cup squad.
“As a spinner-all-rounder, Ashwin is in line,” Rohit assured. “I have been very clear with players about their roles. Everyone is in the loop.”
With these updates from Rohit Sharma, Indian cricket enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to the World Cup with renewed optimism. As the tournament approaches, the team’s focus on recovery and preparation is sure to keep fans eagerly anticipating their performance on the grand stage.
