Lucknow SuperGiants owner Sanjiv Goenka has purchased a significant stake in Manchester Originals, a team competing in England’s The Hundred tournament.
Goenka Expands His Cricket Empire
Apart from Lucknow SuperGiants, Sanjiv Goenka is the owner of SA20’s Durban SuperGiants franchise and the head of RPSG Group. Now by buying a large stake in the Manchester Originals franchise, he has also set foot in The Hundred tournament.
The total value has not been disclosed yet. However, according to reports from Cricbuzz, Sanjiv Goenka has placed a bet on this team for 107 million GBP i.e. about 11.5 billion rupees. Earlier, he had tried for the Lord’s based franchise. Now he owns 49 per cent of Manchester Originals.

Initially, it was not clear about the contenders. But the price discovered through e-auction revealed that. Other competitors were also involved in this race. According to reports, one IPL team was in the race to buy Manchester Originals. Apart from that, another technical consortium was also showing equal interest. Goenka left everyone behind in this race.
No official is ready to give information about which IPL team was involved in this. Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were initially interested in this, but later backed out.
Five Teams Sold in The Hundred
So far, five teams have been sold:
- Oval Invincibles
- Welsh Fire
- London Spirit
- Birmingham Phoenix
- Manchester Originals
Among these, Reliance’s Ambani and RPSG’s Goenka have secured ownership of two teams.
The remaining Franchises Up for Grabs
Three teams are yet to be sold:
- Trent Rockets (Nottingham-based)
- Northern Superchargers (Yorkshire-owned)
- Southern Brave (Hampshire-based)
It is being speculated that the Sunrisers franchise is looking to buy one of these teams. Delhi Capitals’ GMR Group has bought Hampshire County and is set to retain the Brave.
