Shreyas Iyer in IPL Auction: The mega auction is being held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia before the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). Today is the first day of the auction. Shreyas Iyer, who won the title for Kolkata Knight Riders last season, has hit the jackpot.

Punjab Kings bought him for Rs 26.75 crore. His base price was Rs 2 crore. He has become the second most expensive player in IPL history. He has surpassed Mitchell Starc. Rishabh Pant is at the top of this list with 27 crores.

Many franchises bet on Iyer in the auction, but in the end Punjab won. Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders bid on him. After this Delhi Capitals also came into the fray. A battle was seen between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals till the end.

Shreyas Iyer has played for only 2 franchises till now. In 2015, he joined Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils). The franchise bought him for Rs 2.6 crore. After this, he remained with Delhi Capitals till 2021. On 27 April 2018, he also became the captain of Delhi in place of Gautam Gambhir. Under the captaincy of Iyer, Delhi reached the final of IPL 2020. However, in the decisive match, Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets. Due to injury, Iyer did not play half the season of IPL 2021.

Shreyas Iyer’s IPL Journey So Far

In the mega auction held before IPL 2022, Kolkata Knight Riders bought Shreyas Iyer for Rs 12.25 crore and handed over the captaincy of the team. Since then he has been a part of KKR. He was out of IPL 2023 due to injury. Nitish Rana captained KKR in Iyer’s absence. After this, Iyer made a strong comeback in the 17th season.

Shreyas Iyer’s performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 was excellent. He batted brilliantly in the middle order. Iyer scored 530 runs in 11 innings of 11 matches at an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 113.25. He was the third-highest run-scorer for the Indian batsman in the tournament. Even after this, Iyer did not get a central contract from BCCI. However, Iyer did not give up and proved himself in the IPL.
