Shubman Gill on Karun Nair: India will play in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, starting from February 6. Before the ongoing white-ball series, Karun Nair had a stellar performance for Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shubman Gill Defends Team Selection Amid Karun Nair’s Omission
Karun Nair had a stellar performance for Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. With 779 runs in eight innings, there was a lot of pressure on the Board of Control for Cricket in India to include him in the 16-member squad for the ODI series against England. However, the selectors did not pick him, which caused outrage in the cricketing world.
Current ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill expressed his feelings about Karun and his current situation. However, he stressed that no one deserves to be replaced in the current team as all the middle-order batsmen were in form last time.
Gill Supports Team’s Consistency
“He certainly did very well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But, you also have to think about who he was going to replace. The players in the current team are already doing well. In the ODI World Cup, every middle-order batsman scored 400-500 runs.
After that, we have played three ODIs in the group stage. Nobody played for long. We lost in the ODI World Cup final. If you leave that performance, the whole team is performing consistently. I think the players who are already there are performing,” Gill said,

Every Good Team Supports its players
Gill opined that no matter how unfortunate the situation of players who excelled in domestic cricket was, he was a firm believer in giving every player in the national team a fair chance before considering a replacement.
“It is unfortunate that players who have performed well in domestic cricket have not been able to find a place in the team. I firmly believe that for any player to be brought into the team, there should be a place for them as well.
It would not be fair if a player who has already performed is asked to leave. Then, we will not be able to build a consistent team. Every good team supports their players and we do not want insecurities to arise among our players,” Gill added.
The three-match ODI series between India and England is scheduled to begin on February 6. After the 50-over phase of the ongoing white-ball series is over, India will travel to the United Arab Emirates for the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy.
