Shubman Gill The Captain: The announcement of India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup in Mumbai has given a clear signal about the captaincy plans of the BCCI. Shubman Gill, who already leads India in Test cricket, has now been named vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is as well. This move strongly indicates that the selectors and team management see Gill as India’s future all-format captain.
Rohit Sharma is currently the captain in ODIs and if sources are to be believed, he and Virat Kohli will retire from ODIs after the ODI series against Australia in October this year. After this, Shubman Gill will captain the Indian team in the ODI format and the Indian team will play under his leadership in the World Cup to be held in 2027.
At the same time, the current T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has turned 34. There is still one year left in the 2026 T20 World Cup and it is believed that before that Shubman will be appointed captain in T20 as well. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the current selection committee are unanimous on the issue of captaincy.
Shubman Gill The Captain, Proves His Strength
Gill was not part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team last year. But he has since shown his class in both the IPL and international cricket. His captaincy in the Test series against England was especially impressive. Under his leadership, India managed to draw the five-match series 2-2, with Gill scoring over 750 runs. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also pointed out that Gill had been considered vice-captain in T20s earlier. This proves that he has long been in their captaincy plans.
Gill had already impressed in his debut Test series and has continued to grow as a consistent performer. With his calm mindset, ability to score big runs, and leadership qualities, he looks well-prepared to take over the role of India’s next all-format captain.
Suryakumar Yadav Needs Runs
Surya, who has consistently performed well in the IPL, had a very disappointing performance as a batsman in 2024. His average was 26.81, which is much lower than the high of 40 he scored in the last two seasons. Surya had scored 0, 12, 14, 0, and 2 runs in the last five T20 matches. Although the results as a captain have certainly been in his favor, he needs to perform better as a batsman in the Asia Cup.
