Sri Lanka Wins First Test Against New Zealand by 63 Runs
The result of the first Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand played at Galle is on the sixth day. Sri Lanka have won against New Zealand by 63 runs. The opening match between the two teams started on September 18. But on 23rd September i.e. on the sixth day, the result of the match was announced. Sri Lanka needed 2 wickets to win on the sixth day. New Zealand were 68 runs away from victory. But New Zealand lost 2 wickets for 5 runs and Sri Lanka won.
There were high hopes from New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra of Indian origin. On the fifth day, Rachin returned unbeaten on 91 and Ejaz Patel on 0*. On the sixth day, Sri Lankan spinner Prabhath Jayasuriya took 2 quick wickets and restricted New Zealand to 211 runs. Prabhath dismissed Rachin Ravindra and then William O’Rourke. Sri Lanka will vote for the post of President on September 21. So both teams were given rest. Therefore, the fourth day’s game was played on September 22.
Sri Lanka scored 305 runs in the first innings. New Zealand scored 340 runs in reply. That gave the Kiwis a lead of 35 runs. The Sri Lankan Team then scored 309 runs in the second innings. So New Zealand got a challenge of 275 runs. Prabhath Jayasuriya took a total of 9 wickets from The Sri Lankan Team. Prabhath took 4 wickets in the first innings and 5 in the second innings. Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne scored 83, Dinesh Chandimal scored 61 and Angelo Mathews scored 50 runs.
Rachin Ravindra contributed 92 runs in the second innings from New Zealand. Kane Williamson and Tom Blundell both scored 30 runs each. Tom Latham scored 28 runs. Apart from these four from New Zealand, no one could reach double figures in the second innings. Prabhath Jayasuriya was felicitated withe th Man of the Match award.
