The New Zealand batsmen crumbled in the face of Sri Lankan spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya, who took six wickets in 18 overs. Jayasuriya has now taken five or more wickets on nine occasions in his cricket career, with this being his latest feat against New Zealand.

In addition to Jayasuriya’s brilliance, Nishan Peiris took three wickets, and Asitha Fernando claimed one. This lead marks the fifth-largest first-innings lead in the history of Test cricket. It’s also the second time New Zealand has faced such a significant first-innings deficit. New Zealand had previously encountered a 570-run lead against Pakistan in 2002.
Sri Lankan bowlers dominated the New Zealand lineup, with no batsman managing to score 30 runs.
