With a 514-run lead, Sri Lanka declared their innings, compelling New Zealand to follow on. The New Zealand batsmen crumbled in the face of Sri Lankan spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya, who took six wickets in 18 overs. Jayasuriya has now taken five or more wickets on nine occasions in his cricket career, with this being his latest feat against New Zealand.

In addition to Jayasuriya’s brilliance, Nishan Peiris took three wickets, and Asitha Fernando claimed one. This lead marks the fifth-largest first-innings lead in the history of Test cricket. It’s also the second time New Zealand has faced such a significant first-innings deficit. New Zealand had previously encountered a 570-run lead against Pakistan in 2002.
Sri Lankan bowlers dominated the New Zealand lineup, with no batsman managing to score 30 runs. Only three batsmen reached double figures, with Mitchell Santner top-scoring at 29, Daryl Mitchell contributing 13, and Rachin Ravindra scoring 10. None of the other players managed to reach 10 runs, putting New Zealand in grave danger of losing the match by an innings.
