South Africa Clinches Victory Against West Indies in Super 8 T20 World Cup Clash

Hosts West Indies and South Africa clash today in Super-8 of the Twenty20 World Cup 2024. The match was played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and batting was often rained out. It was a ‘do or die’ fight for both teams. South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first. Batting first, hosts Viding posted a respectable score of 135 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs. South Africa finally won this match which was in discussion due to low score, rain batting, and various reasons. They managed to defeat the hosts by 3 wickets and 5 balls to spare.

West Indies Bat First and Set a Modest Target

Batting first, Roston Chase top-scored for West Indies, scoring 52 runs off 42 balls with 2 sixes and 3 fours. From Africa, Tabrez Shamsi took the most wickets (3) to keep the hosts within 150. Apart from him, Marco Jansen, captain Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, and Kagiso Rabada took 1 wicket each.

South Africa’s Steady Chase to Victory:

West Indies team is out of the World Cup with this defeat. In the Super-8 match, South Africa defeated the hosts by 3 wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis rules. Viding scored 135 runs while batting first. While chasing this challenge, Africa’s innings were interrupted by rain. Then they were given a target of 123 runs in 17 overs. Playing as a team, Africa reached the score at a snail’s pace. They won by losing 7 wickets in 16.1 overs. Marco Janssen scored an unbeaten 21 off 14 balls. Apart from this, Tristan Stubbs scored 29 runs and Henrik Klaasen scored 22 runs.

Chasing the West Indies’ 136-run challenge, Africa suffered its first blow at 12 runs. Andre Russell shows Riza Hendricks the way out. Russell also dismissed Quinton de Kock in the same over. Africa scored 15 runs in the first two overs of their innings. Then the game had to be stopped due to rain. Had the match been called off then, this is where South Africa would have stormed into the semi-finals. But, after the rain stopped, the game resumed. But three overs in the innings were reduced. Now South Africa have a target of 123 runs in 17 overs. The team had already scored 15 runs in this. That means they needed 108 runs to win in 15 overs. So only two bowlers could bowl four overs for the West Indies and the powerplay was reduced to five overs.

South Africa suffered a third shock at the team’s 42 runs. Alzari Joseph caught skipper Aiden Markram in the sixth over. After six overs, South Africa’s score was 50 for three wickets. South Africa needed 73 runs off 66 balls and came into the match. Then on 77 runs Africa got another blow in the form of Henrik Klaasen. After eight overs, South Africa’s score was 77 for four wickets. David Miller’s hat-trick and Keshav Maharaj’s wicket then saw the hosts make a comeback.

In the last over, South Africa needed 6 runs to win. The bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Johnson had time to perform with the bat. He sealed the victory for his team with a restrained innings. In the end, South Africa reached the semi-finals by winning the Duckworth-Lewis rule.
