Sri Lanka Cricket’s Restructuring: What’s Next After World Cup Disappointment?

A Matthews

The Sri Lanka cricket restructuring was a consequence of a humbling loss the team experienced during the 2023 World Cup. This particular match, held on 2nd November in Mumbai, saw the host India take the lead with up to 302 runs.

In the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s World Cup letdown, Minister of Sports Roshan Ranasinghe has leveled serious accusations at the country’s cricket governing body, calling its members corrupt and treacherous. Advocating for the resignation of board members, Ranasinghe’s critique echoes a longstanding discord between the government and Sri Lanka Cricket, marked by allegations of inadequate U19 World Cup preparation and a questionable $2 million fund transfer.

The New Sri Lanka Cricket Board

As protests from cricket fans became the order of the day at the board’s headquarters, one of its members chose to resign. That’s none other than Mohan de Silva. He ranks second among the board members and serves as its secretary. He submitted his resignation on Saturday amidst the protests.

The next Monday, the minister sacked the rest of the Sri Lanka Cricket board members. In its place, he set an interim committee to serve in their absence. Its chair was Arjuna Ranatunga, who is a former captain with a record of winning the World Cup.

Besides Ranatunga, other members of the interim committee included two retired judges who served at the Supreme Court. The number of its members is seven.

The Consequences of the Sri Lanka Cricket’s Restructuring

Due to this change, the county is facing several consequences, and the notable ones include the following;

Dismissal of the Decision by the Court of Appeal

One day after the selection of the interim committee, the Court of Appeal dismissed it. It also reinstated the former board members. It was after a petition by Shammi Silva, who served as the president of the board that the minister sacked it.

The judgment of the case involved granting Shammi Silva a stay order of up to 2 weeks. It also directed a full hearing that would support or dismiss the sacking, which was a relief to the board members, especially the President.

Sri Lanka Cricket Suspension by the International Cricket Council

The International Cricket Council (ICC) interpreted the minister’s dismissal and replacement of the board members as government interference. Consequently, the council suspended Sri Lanka from competing internationally. In other words, the country’s team couldn’t participate in ICC events and bilateral Cricket.

Fortunately, it was reinstated by the ICC, thus giving Sri Lanka the go-ahead to compete internationally once more. However, its future funding would be under the management of ICC and its board.

Cancellation of Sri Lanka Hosting the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup

Were it not for this standoff, Sri Lanka was to host the 2024 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup. Despite its membership being reinstated, the hosting was revoked permanently. It could compete, but the hosting was assigned to South Africa instead.

Sri Lanka’s Performance in the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup

India was the host of the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup. It is also one of the teams that defeated Sri Lanka by a huge margin. This defeat was so humiliating that the fan’s protests and sacking began as soon as it ended.

It isn’t the only match that the Sri Lanka cricket team lost, though. Out of the nine games it played during this Cricket World Cup, it lost all except 2. This performance saw them only defeat one team as it was second from the bottom.

Final Words

The Sri Lanka Cricket world has had countless storms, no doubt. From the humiliating defeats to the terrible overall performance at the end of the Cricket World Cup in India, the team didn’t have much to celebrate.

Back at home, the situation could have been better. The tag of war between the government and the board members didn’t go unnoticed. There was the dismissal of the old board members and the appointment of an interim committee.

Interventions by the ICC also came about, for instance, the temporary suspension of Sri Lanka as its member. The country won’t be the host of the 2024 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
