Sri Lanka Dominate New Zealand, Take Massive Lead
Sri Lanka bowled out New Zealand for 88 runs on the third day of the second and final Test. Sri Lanka has taken a huge lead of 514 runs with this. New Zealand could only reach 88 in reply to Sri Lanka’s 602 in the first innings. New Zealand lost 8 wickets for just 66 runs on the third day. New Zealand had scored 22 runs for the loss of 2 wickets by the end of the second day’s play. Prabhath Jayasuriya took the most wickets from Sri Lanka with 6 wickets.
This is the eighth time Jayasuriya has taken 5 wickets in a Test. Debutant Nishan Parris led the trio off the field. While Asitha Fernando took 1 wicket and gave good support to both of them. Now Sri Lanka has given a follow-on to New Zealand. New Zealand lost their first wicket on the last ball of the first over of the second innings. It is only the second time Sri Lanka have taken a lead of more than 500 runs in Test cricket. The Sri Lankan team had previously taken a lead of 587 runs against South Africa in 2006. England holds the world record for the highest first-innings lead in a Test. England took a lead of 702 runs against Australia in 1938.
Meanwhile, The Sri Lankan team declared the first innings at 602 for 5 in 163.4 overs. Kamindu Mendis scored 182 not out for Sri Lanka. Kusal Mendis scored 106 not out. Dinesh Chandimal contributed 116 runs. Angelo Mathews scored 88 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne added 46 runs and captain Dhananjaya de Silva added 44 runs. While Pathum Nisanka scored 1 run. Glenn Phillips was the top wicket-taker for New Zealand with 3 wickets. Captain Tim Southee took 1 wicket.
With a commanding lead, Sri Lanka enforced the follow-on, and New Zealand lost their first wicket early in their second innings. The match continues with Sri Lanka in full control, and New Zealand will need a miracle to avoid defeat.
