Steve Smith Set to Drop Down the Order Ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

David Warner’s retirement creates a matter of concern for Australian team management and chief selector George Bailey. David Warner scored just 174 runs at an AVG of 28.50 against New Zealand. He played his last Test match against Pakistan.

However, according to some latest news, Australian team management confirmed Steve Smith will not be seen as an opener in the Border Gavsker Trophy. The main reason behind this is the injury of Green. Smith will handle the middle order.

The Australian team needs a solid player in the middle order to absorb the pressure and handle the situation. Steve Smith is a perfect player in these situations. The Australian team also wants six batsmen in this series.

The Chief Selector, George Bailey, said there are still a few weeks remaining to announce the squad, so they will wait for some new updates. 

“Pat Cummins, Andrew McDonald, and Steve Smith have been having ongoing conversations, separate from the untimely injury to Cameron anyway. Steve had expressed a desire to move back down from that opening position, and Pat and Andrew have confirmed that he will be dropping back down the order for the summer. Clearly we’ve got a number four spot to fill and an opening spot to fill.”

However, Bailey did not give exact clarification about batting order in the team. He said the batting order of Steve Smith is decided according to the situation by the captain and coach. 

If the Australian team will be able to fill the gap of Cameron Green, then Smith will be considered as an opener. The Australian team can give a chance to some young talent in place of Green. 

Indian fast bowler M. Shami Place in Squad is also doubtful. He is recovering from an ankle injury.

Steve Smith is one of the best players in the Test format from the last decade. Smith’s records against India are also very good, so the Australian team wants to use Smith very cleverly against India.
