T20 World Cup 2024: Uganda’s Jersey Controversy

As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, a total of 20 teams are gearing up for the competition, which starts in just two days. However, a recent issue with Uganda’s team jersey has caused tension for the ICC. Uganda, participating in the T20 World Cup for the first time, faced a request from the ICC to alter their jersey design. This has led to some last-minute adjustments and concerns.

Uganda’s National Bird-Inspired Jersey Design

Uganda’s World Cup jersey, inspired by the national bird, the grey-crowned crane, was designed by Elijah Mangani and officially unveiled in March. The design was chosen through a competition organized by the Uganda Cricket Board. The jersey featured prominent wing patterns on the sleeves, which were meant to symbolize the national bird’s wings. This unique design was meant to bring a sense of national pride and distinctiveness to the team’s attire.

ICC’s Request and the Resulting Changes

According to a report on cricket.com.au, the ICC requested changes to Uganda’s jersey design just before the team left for the West Indies. The issue arose because the feathered design on the sleeves obscured the sponsor logos, making them less visible. This prompted the ICC to ask for modifications to ensure better visibility for the sponsors. As a result, Uganda had to remove 20 percent of the original design, particularly the winged pattern on the sleeves, while retaining the rest of the design.

Musali Dennis, Public Relations Officer of the Uganda Cricket Association, explained, “The ICC had asked to change the design. However, due to time constraints, the chosen jersey design has been compromised. Twenty percent of the original design has been removed and the rest of the design has been kept as it is.” Despite the changes, the team and its fans remain excited for Uganda’s first match in the T20 World Cup against Afghanistan in Guyana.
