T20 World Cup 2024: Six Unique Firsts
Dual Hosting by West Indies and USA
The World Cup is hosted by the West Indies and the USA Cricket Association. For the first time, two boards will host the T20 World Cup. Before this, only one board has organized this competition 8 times. This is the first time that America has won an ICC tournament. The US is also set to host the Olympics in 2028, which will also include cricket.
The US will become the second Associate Member to host the T20 World Cup. Associate means those who have not been given the status to play Test cricket by ICC. Before America, the 2021 T20 World Cup was played in partner UAE. However, it was hosted by India, as the tournament was hosted by the BCCI.
Historic Expansion: 20 Teams in T20 World Cup 2024
For the first time, 20 teams will participate in the T-20 World Cup. This time 20 teams were divided into 4 different groups of 5 teams each. The top 2 teams from both groups will play the semi-finals here and the winners will play the final in Barbados on June 29.

Innovative Drop-In Pitches from Australia to New York
A drop-in pitch is in use at Nassau County Stadium in New York. Drop-in pitches are built outside the field and then installed in the stadium. The Nassau Stadium pitch was built in Australia. In January this year, 10 pitches were brought by sea to Florida, USA, where after 5 months of preparation, they were installed in the Nassau Stadium in May itself. 6 out of 10 pitches are for practice, while 8 matches will be played on 4 pitches. For the first time, pitches made in another country will be used in the World Cup. The drop-in pitch will be used for the T20 World Cup. Which was taken from Australia to America. There will be no international cricket stadium in New York until December 2023.
Modular Stadium in New York: A Temporary Marvel for the T20 World Cup
A Modular Stadium has been constructed here in the last 6 months. Its pitch was brought from Australia, while the stand was brought from the Formula 1 race. This stadium can seat 34 thousand spectators. The modular stadium will be used for the first time in the World Cup. 8 group matches including the India-Pakistan match will be played here. Interestingly, it will be converted into a park after the tournament. A stadium has now been built in Eisenhower, New York to play international cricket, which was an ordinary park till March 2024.
Introduction of the Stop Clock Rule
The stop-clock rule will be used for the first time in an ICC tournament. The bowling team will get only 60 seconds in 2 overs. After the over is over, the third umpire will start the timer on the TV screen installed in the field. If the next over starts after 60 seconds, the field umpire will give two warnings to the captain of the fielding team.
If it takes more than 60 seconds to bowl the next over three times in an innings, a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed. These 5 runs will be added to the score of the batting team. The bowling team will be penalized for every third mistake in the innings. The trial of this rule for time management was started in December last year. Which has now been rectified.
