Ravichandran Ashwin Criticizes IPL’s Right to Match Rule
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has openly criticized a major rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) – the Right to Match (RTM) rule. Ashwin believes that the RTM rule, used during IPL auctions, is unfair to players as it prevents them from getting their true market value. The RTM rule allows a franchise to match the highest bid for a player they had previously released, effectively buying the player back. However, Ashwin feels this rule benefits the franchise but not the player.

RTM Rule and Its Impact on Players
The RTM rule has been a part of the IPL auctions, allowing franchises to retain up to three players who were released before the auction. This rule was removed during the mega auction in 2022 due to the introduction of two new franchises. However, discussions are underway to bring it back for IPL 2025. Ashwin, however, is strongly against its return, arguing that it prevents players from achieving their true value in the market.

Ashwin’s Concerns About the RTM Rule
Ashwin explained his concerns on his YouTube channel, giving an example where a player’s bid might reach Rs 6 crore between two teams, only for the original franchise to use the RTM and buy back the player at the same price. This, Ashwin argues, leaves both the bidding teams and the players dissatisfied. He believes that the RTM rule forces players to accept less than their potential market value, which is why he is against its reintroduction in future IPL auctions. Ashwin firmly believes that the removal of the RTM rule would be in the best interest of the players, allowing them to earn what they truly deserve.
