The IPL season is really heating up! We’re not even halfway through yet, but already, we’ve seen some unforgettable performances that will be talked about for years to come.
Priyansh Arya showcased his six-hitting prowess, scoring a sensational match-winning 100 against CSK while running out of partners at the other end. Mohammed Siraj led GT’s pace attack from the front and returned impressive figures of 4/17 against RCB, the club he represented for seven years. Abhishek Sharma’s 141 off 55 balls made quick work of the mammoth 246 that the Men in Orange set out to chase.
It was absolutely thrilling to witness the incredible impact these players had with their outstanding performances. This season has also been exciting, as we’ve seen several others shine brightly with consistent performances, both with the bat and the ball, match after match.
Let’s look at a few players who we believe have truly made a difference for their teams, whether it’s leading them to victory or putting them in a strong position to take control of things and secure a win.
Nicholas Pooran, LSG
The 29-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago is a unique player, gifted with the ability to time the ball at excellent bat speed: when he strikes the ball, it stays hit. This rare talent makes this southpaw a formidable ball striker who can clear the boundary at will and keep the scoreboard ticking at a brisk pace, regardless of the situation or the bowler he faces. He has shown his destructive best in four innings, particularly at home against KKR, when he raced to 87* off 36 deliveries, hitting seven fours and six sixes, leading LSG to a match-winning total.
Vaayu Saxena from MyBettingSitesIndia , a site that lists the top betting sites in India, points out that there is significant betting interest in Pooran to top the sixes charts this season. With 31 maximums from just six games, he is certainly on the right track.
Sai Sudharsan, GT
The beauty of the T20 format is that even stroke-makers have their place here. Sai Sudharsan doesn’t possess the same power as Pooran to bludgeon the ball. Nor does he have an aggressive style, but he nonchalantly accumulates runs in his own way. And he has been very effective- that’s all that matters.
He’s the epitome of how batsmen who lack the power to hit the leather off the ball can still be relevant in this format. With four scores of 50+ (74, 63, 82, and 56), the left-hander from Tamil Nadu holds the key for the Gujarat Titans to progress in this tournament.
Mitchell Marsh, LSG
Picked solely for his batting credentials, the Western Australian has seized the opportunity to play at the top order with both hands. He is recognised for his fearless play during the powerplay overs, and the Aussie T20 captain has excelled, scoring four half-centuries in six matches and showcasing a new level of consistency with the bat. Partnering with Nicholas Pooran, Marsh has dismantled bowling attacks with remarkable ease and provided stability at the top, which has been crucial for LSG given the lack of runs from the bat of team captain Pant.
KL Rahul, DC
Following a splendid run over the last 18 months in the international arena, KL Rahul has carried his form into the IPL as he tries to settle into his new role with the Delhi Capitals. In four matches so far, he has scored (15, 77, 93*, 15), with his best performance coming in his own backyard in Bengaluru against RCB. His wild celebration after leading his team to victory was uncharacteristic of him, but it indicated that he is in excellent form with the bat and in a very good mental space. He needs to continue producing such impactful performances if the Delhi Capitals are to go deep in the tournament.
Sai Kishore, GT
The lanky spinner from Tamil Nadu has eclipsed the likes of Rashid Khan, the magician from Afghanistan, by putting in some impactful performances for the Gujarat Titans this season. With 10 wickets from 6 games so far, he has been instrumental in securing victories for his team on several occasions. In the two matches where he didn’t perform well, GT ended up on the losing side. This clearly shows how decisive Kishore’s contributions have been in achieving victories for his team. If GT are to progress further and secure a spot in the knockouts, the left-arm spinner should continue the good work he has been doing.
Kuldeep Yadav, DC
The left-arm chinaman bowler, with 10 wickets from 5 matches, has made a significant impact for DC in the middle overs. As the only bowler with an economy rate below 6 runs per over in the tournament, Kuldeep Yadav has baffled batters with his subtle variations and precise line and length. He will need to continue playing that role to help DC maintain its winning streak and finish the round-robin stage as table toppers.
That’s a wrap. We’ve had the privilege of witnessing several brilliant performances from other players, too, especially from the likes of spinner Noor Ahmed, who has bamboozled batters with his guile. But it’s a shame that the CSK batsmen have utterly failed to show up and score enough runs on the board to give the Afghani something to work with and to win games.
With over half a season ahead of us, we can expect more scintillating performances from several players with both the ball and the bat, which should make for interesting viewing.
