UP Warriors New Head Coach: Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nair has been appointed as the new head coach of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriors. The franchise made this announcement on Friday, confirming that Nair will take over the role from John Lewis, whose association with the team ended recently.
Abhishek Nair was part of the Indian men’s cricket team setup as an assistant coach, but was removed from that position recently. He had worked with the national side for less than a year. Now, with his new role at UP Warriors, Nair will be returning to familiar territory, as he had earlier worked with the franchise during the inaugural season of the WPL in 2023.
Abhishek Nair Already Part of KKR’s Coaching Staff
Apart from his involvement in women’s cricket, Nair is also associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After his exit from the Indian national team, he continued his coaching journey with KKR, where he has been a vital part of the support staff.
Speaking about his appointment, Nair said, “I enjoyed working with UP Warriors earlier, and I am thrilled about this new role. WPL is a great platform for women’s cricket, and I am looking forward to working closely with the management to build a strong team.”
UP Warriors Eye Strong Comeback in WPL
UP Warriors had a strong start to their WPL journey by reaching the playoffs in the 2023 season. However, their performance declined in the following editions, finishing fourth and fifth in the five-team league over the last two years.
With the addition of a seasoned coach like Abhishek Nair, the franchise is hopeful for a turnaround in the upcoming season. The team management believes his experience and tactical understanding will bring a fresh approach to the squad.
