The construction of Wankhede Stadium began in 1974 under the leadership of politician and Mumbai Cricket Association secretary S.K. Wankhede. It was completed in just 13 months. The first Test series was played here in 1975 between India and West Indies.

Indian team captain Rohit Sharma said, โ€œHello, everyone. Wankhede is celebrating its 50th anniversary on January 19. This is a very proud moment for all Mumbaikars, especially those who have been associated with Mumbai cricket for many years.

I have a very special relationship with this ground. It holds many memories. I started playing cricket here, and since then, it has been a wonderful journey.โ€

At this event, Rohit Sharma also revealed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 plan. Indian menโ€™s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma said, โ€œWe will try our best. It has always been a dream to represent the Indian team in any ICC trophy.
