Papua New Guinea’s Struggles Against Afghanistan’s Bowlers
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first and bowled out rivals Papua New Guinea for just 95 runs. Apart from the wicket-keeper batsman Kiplin Doriga (27), none of the batsmen from the Papua New Guinea team could make a big innings. Afghanistan’s spinners continued to do their best to make the opposing team’s batsmen sweat. For Afghanistan, Fazalhaq Farooqui took the most wickets (3), while Naveen-ul-Haq (2) and Noor Ahmed (1). As many as four batsmen of Papua New Guinea were run out. In the end, Papua New Guinea was bowled out for just 95 runs in 19.5 overs. Chasing an easy challenge of 96 runs, Afghanistan won easily.
Implications for Group C and the Super-8:
Afghanistan’s victory has ended New Zealand’s challenge in this year’s World Cup. West Indies and New Zealand are in Group C. West Indies became the first team to qualify for Super-8 from this group. They won 3 out of 3 matches. New Zealand, on the other hand, have lost both of their two matches. Afghanistan entered the Super-8 with six points after winning all three out of three matches. So, even if New Zealand wins the remaining two matches, they will not be able to reach the Super-8 round. So the Kiwi team’s challenge in the tournament has ended. Two teams from each group will qualify for the Super-8, as hosts West Indies and Afghanistan from Group C qualified with 6 points each.
