T20 World Cup 2024: Return to the Group Stage Format

After 2012, the T20 World Cup is making a comeback to the group stage format. This time 20 teams have been divided into 4 groups of 5 each. The top 2 teams in the points table from each group will advance to the Super-8 stage. The remaining 3 teams will be eliminated. The 2007 tournament also featured a group stage, with 12 teams participating. Till 2012 neither the format changed nor the team grew. In 2014 and 2016 there were 14 teams each. Here 8 teams got direct entry to Super-10, while 2 out of the remaining 6 teams entered the Super-10 by playing qualifiers.

The Super-12 round came in 2021 and 2022 and the number of teams increased to 16. Here 8 teams got direct entry to Super-12. While 4 of the remaining 8 teams reached the Super-12 by playing the qualifiers. Now the group stage is back again in 2024 and the number of teams has been increased to 20.

Super-8 Stage and Knockout Rounds

In the Super-8 stage, the top 8 teams will be split into two groups of 4. The top 2 teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, and the remaining teams will be eliminated. The semi-final winners will compete in the final in Barbados on June 29. This structure ensures a high level of competition, with each match being crucial for progression.

4. What are the match timings for Indian viewers?

The International Cricket Council i.e. ICC has made the World Cup schedule according to Indian time. In the tournament, 40 group-stage matches will be held at 6 different times. That means some matches will start at 5 and 6 am, while others will start at 8, 9, 10:30 and 12:30 pm. All matches in the Super-8 stage will start at 6 am or 8 pm.

The good thing is that all the matches will start after 8 PM IST and end before 10 AM. All the matches of Team India will start at 8 PM. Even if India reaches the knockout stage, the matches will be played from 8 pm onwards. Most of the matches of the recently concluded IPL were also played at this time.

5. What happens in case of a tie?

In the event of a tie during the group or Super-8 stages, a Super Over will determine the winner. If the Super Over is tied or not possible due to rain, the match will be declared a draw, with each team receiving 1 point.

6. What if there is a tie in the Super Over?

The second will be a super over. The super-over will continue until the results are announced. If the Super Over is not possible due to rain, the match will be considered a tie and both teams will be awarded 1 point each.

7. What happens if it rains during a match?

In case of rain, the decision will be made by DLS i.e. Duckworth Lewis Stern method. However, there is a condition for this too. In the Group Stage and Super-8, the DLS method requires a minimum of 5 overs in the second innings.

The first semi-final will begin on June 26 in Trinidad at 8 pm US time. If it rains, there will be an extra time of 60 minutes i.e. one hour to organize the match on the same day. If the match is still not completed, the game will go to reserve day. A reserve day will have 190 minutes, where the play will pick up where it left off the previous day.

The other semi-final will begin on June 27 at 10:30 am US time in Guyana. In case of rain on the same day, an additional time of 250 minutes i.e. 4 hours and 10 minutes has been kept. No day will be reserved for this. If the reserve day is kept, the match will last until June 28, in which case the winner of the semi-final will have very little time for the final. The final match will be held the next day June 29.

Q-10: Is there a reserved day for finals?
