The decision to Bring Stability

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finally put an end to lingering questions by appointing Babar Azam once again as the captain for white-ball cricket. Designated for T20 and One Day Internationals, Babar Azam will lead Pakistan’s cricket team, as confirmed by PCB through their official Twitter handle. The selection committee and PCB Chairman Mohsin Khan unanimously decided on Babar Azam’s re-appointment as the captain, which hints at stability in the leadership ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024.

Shahid Afridi’s Departure

Previously, Shahid Afridi held the position of captain for Pakistan’s T20 team. However, he voluntarily stepped down from the captaincy role, which led to his removal from the position. Subsequently, leadership discussions resurfaced, eventually leading to Babar Azam’s reinstatement. According to reports from ‘The Times Now,’ Shahid Afridi faced dissatisfaction from PCB Chairman Mohsin Khan. The decision to remove Afridi from captaincy was made without consulting him, which led to his departure. Under Afridi’s leadership, Pakistan only played one T20 series, suffering a 4-1 defeat, which contributed to his removal from the position.

Uncertainty Surrounding Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi appears ready to step away from the captaincy position. However, there has been no official communication or confirmation from the board regarding any information regarding Afridi’s plans. Former captain Babar Azam is now tasked with the responsibility once again. Alongside Babar, Mohammad Rizwan’s name had also been discussed during the selection process. Following Babar Azam’s decision to step down from captaincy after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Pakistan witnessed a transition in leadership, with Test captain Shan Masood taking over the T20 captaincy temporarily. Eventually, Shahid Afridi was appointed as the captain of the T20 team, while Shahid Afridi was entrusted with leading the T20 team.
