Mumbai Indians recently made a significant decision by removing Rohit Sharma, the most successful captain in the history of IPL, from his captaincy position.
Former Gujarat Titans captain, Hardik Pandya, succeeded him. This decision faced criticism from many Mumbai Indians fans, sparking considerable debate on social media. Rohitโs removal has resulted in a decrease in Mumbai Indiansโ followers on social media platforms.
Under Rohit Sharmaโs leadership, Mumbai Indians claimed the IPL title five times, making both Mumbai and Chennai the most successful teams in IPL history, with each team securing the title five times. Now, many are opposing the choice of appointing Hardik as the captain of Mumbai Indians over Rohit.
Sunil Gavaskarโs Endorsement: Embracing Change for Fresh Leadership in IPL
Despite the strong opposition, a supportive voice for Hardik Pandya has emerged. A famous Indian cricketer backed this decision. Renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his opinion on the decision to replace Rohit with Hardik as captain.
Gavaskar suggested that the management should recognize the teamโs need for fresh and innovative ideas under new leadership. Highlighting Hardik Pandyaโs successful captaincy, Gavaskar mentioned Gujarat Titans winning the IPL trophy in their debut season, although this year, they settled for the runner-up position.
Regarding Rohit, Gavaskar stated, โWe donโt have to determine right or wrong here. He made this decision for the teamโs betterment.
Rohitโs batting contributions have declined in the past two years; previously, he used to score significantly.โ Gavaskar pointed out the decline in Mumbaiโs ranking in the points table, emphasizing the absence of the exhilaration brought by Rohit Sharmaโs previous batting performances.
He suggested that Rohit might have been fatigued due to constant cricket and the responsibility of captaining the Indian team.
When asked about Rohitโs replacement as captain, Gavaskar said, โHardik is a young captain who has delivered results. His decisions might have been well thought out.
Hardik led Gujarat to the finals twice, winning the title in 2022. Considering all these factors, Mumbai Indians must have appointed him as captain,โ concluded Gavaskar.
