Despite the strong opposition, a supportive voice for Hardik Pandya has emerged. A famous Indian cricketer backed this decision. Renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his opinion on the decision to replace Rohit with Hardik as captain.
Gavaskar suggested that the management should recognize the team’s need for fresh and innovative ideas under new leadership. Highlighting Hardik Pandya’s successful captaincy, Gavaskar mentioned Gujarat Titans winning the IPL trophy in their debut season, although this year, they settled for the runner-up position.
Regarding Rohit, Gavaskar stated, ‘We don’t have to determine right or wrong here. He made this decision for the team’s betterment.
Rohit’s batting contributions have declined in the past two years; previously, he used to score significantly.’ Gavaskar pointed out the decline in Mumbai’s ranking in the points table, emphasizing the absence of the exhilaration brought by Rohit Sharma’s previous batting performances.
He suggested that Rohit might have been fatigued due to constant cricket and the responsibility of captaining the Indian team.
When asked about Rohit’s replacement as captain, Gavaskar said, ‘Hardik is a young captain who has delivered results. His decisions might have been well thought out.
Hardik led Gujarat to the finals twice, winning the title in 2022. Considering all these factors, Mumbai Indians must have appointed him as captain,’ concluded Gavaskar.
