 Five Australian legends who dominated Test cricket in Asian conditions

Australian cricketers have a different status in the cricket world. Australian batsmen dominate, especially in Test cricket. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Australian team dominated red-ball cricket. Players like Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden were often in the news.

Mark Taylor: 

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor scored a triple century in 1998 by batting aggressively against Pakistan. He played an innings of 334 runs in 564 balls which is his best score. He showed his patience by playing such a long innings in Asian conditions. Bowlers like Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq failed there.  Making them flop, he scored his third century in Test cricket. With this, he became only the fifth Australian cricketer to score a triple century in Test cricket and the third player to score a double century in Asia.

Greg Chappell:

Australian legend Greg Chappell played an aggressive innings against Pakistan in Faisalabad in 1980. He scored 235 runs in 363 balls. During this inning, he hit 21 fours. With this, he became the first Australian player to score a double century in Asia. He made a partnership of 217 runs with Graham Yallop. Due to the brilliant performance of both, Australia scored a huge score of 617 runs during the first innings.

Usman Khawaja:

In the recent Test match against Sri Lanka in January 2025, Usman Khawaja played an aggressive innings and scored 232 runs in 352 balls. Technical slam batsman Khawaja and Steve Smith shared a 266-run partnership for the third wicket. During this inning, he hit 16 fours and a six. He created new history by becoming the fifth Australian player to score a double century in Asia.

Dean Jones:

In the Test match played in Madras in 1986, Dean Jones played a brilliant innings of 210 runs. He played this historic innings even in temperatures above 40 degrees. He played a long innings of 210 runs in Asian conditions with the help of 27 fours and 2 sixes in 330 balls. Due to his innings, Australia’s score was 574 runs. At that time he was the second Australian to score a double century in Asia.  

Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden played an aggressive innings of 203 runs against India in Chennai in 2001. During the third test match, he faced Indian bowlers like Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble. Adopting a balanced strategy, he played sweeps and powerful strokes. He scored 203 runs in 320 balls, hitting 15 fours and six sixes during Manish Pari. This was the fourth century scored by an Australian in India. Stone Australia scored 391 runs in total.
