India’s Victory Over USA: Benefitting from New ICC Rule

The Indian team registered a significant win against the United States in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, aided by a new ICC rule. The match saw early setbacks for India as Virat Kohli’s struggles continued, being dismissed for a golden duck by Saurabh Netrawalkar. Rohit Sharma also fell prey to Netrawalkar, scoring just 3 runs. With both openers back in the tent at a mere 10 runs, India faced a challenging start.

Middle Order Resilience and Crucial ICC Rule Enforcement

Despite the shaky beginning, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant managed to stabilize the innings temporarily. However, Ali Khan’s exceptional delivery bowled Rishabh for 18, reducing India to 39 for 3. The American bowlers effectively utilized the fertile pitch, putting pressure on India’s middle order. Shivam Dubey, facing the heat, survived two run-out attempts, while Suryakumar Yadav also struggled against the American attack. At the end of 12 overs, the USA was at 59 for 4, while India was at 55 for 3.

The turning point came when Suryakumar Yadav, initially caught on 22 but saved by a no-ball, capitalized on the opportunity and started batting aggressively. India’s requirement of 35 runs from 30 balls was further eased when the USA took longer than the allowed time to complete the 16th over, incurring a 5-run penalty. This new ICC rule mandates that the gap between overs should not exceed 60 seconds, and failure to comply thrice results in a 5-run penalty.

Strategic Play Leads to Victory

The penalty reduced India’s target to 30 runs from 30 balls, shifting the momentum significantly. Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dubey made the most of this advantage, guiding India to victory with an unbeaten partnership. Suryakumar finished with 50 not out, while Dubey remained at 31 not out. Arshdeep Singh’s earlier four-wicket haul, which restricted the USA to 110 runs, earned him the Man of the Match award.
