India’s Super-8 Challenge: Facing Afghanistan

Team India is set to play its first match in the Super-8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Afghanistan on June 20 in Barbados. India has performed strongly so far, winning all their first three matches. However, the upcoming match poses a new challenge, especially from Afghanistan’s formidable left-arm bowlers.

Key Bowlers to Watch Out For

Afghanistan’s left-arm fast bowler, Fazal Haq Farooqui, and left-arm spinner, Noor Ahmed, are expected to be major threats. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have historically struggled against left-arm bowling. Farooqui, in particular, has been in excellent form, taking 12 wickets in 4 matches, with 9 of those coming in the powerplay. His swing and ability to bowl inside deliveries have consistently troubled batsmen. Noor Ahmed, who plays for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, has also been effective in restricting Kohli.

Rohit and Virat’s Struggle

Rohit Sharma, despite being a dangerous opener, has been vulnerable against left-arm bowlers. He has been dismissed twice in the current tournament by left-arm pacers, including Shaheen Shah Afridi from Pakistan and Saurabh Netrawalkar from the USA. Similarly, Virat Kohli has found it difficult to score runs against left-arm spinners like Noor Ahmed. These bowlers will be key obstacles for India’s top order in the match against Afghanistan.

India will need to strategize carefully to handle Afghanistan’s strong bowling attack and ensure a successful start to their Super-8 campaign.
